How to Participate
Where We Are Now
Trial enrollment is already active in the United Kingdom and will start soon in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, and Ireland. In the United States, enrollment is anticipated to begin in Summer 2026. If you are a woman with a small AAA and are interested in participating, we encourage you to speak with your vascular surgeon about whether you may be a candidate.
Could You Be Eligible?
You may be eligible for WARRIORS if you are:
A woman aged 50 or older
Diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm measuring between 4.0 and 5.4 cm
Eligible for minimally invasive endovascular repair (EVAR) based on imaging
Able to give informed consent and attend follow-up visits
What to Expect at Screening & Enrollment
At your screening visit, you can expect the following:
- A CT scan (unless you have had a recent one) to confirm your aneurysm meets the size criteria and that you are eligible for EVAR
- A review of your medical history and current health
- Basic measurements: height, weight, and blood pressure
- A blood draw to check kidney function
- A brief frailty assessment
- Short surveys about your anxiety levels and quality of life
If you qualify and give your consent, you will then be randomly assigned to one of two groups: Early EVAR or Continued Monitoring of your AAA.
What Happens After Enrollment
Women assigned to Early EVAR will have their procedure scheduled within approximately two months of enrollment. A follow-up visit with imaging will occur within three months after the EVAR procedure.
For all participants, the following schedule applies over the five years of the study:
| Timeframe | Surveys | Imaging With Your Surgeon |
| 1–3 months | — | Post-operative imaging (Early EVAR group only) |
| Year 1 | Study surveys | Routine imaging |
| Year 2 | — | Routine imaging |
| Year 3 | Study surveys | Routine imaging |
| Year 4 | — | Routine imaging |
| Year 5 | Study surveys | Routine imaging, including a 5-year CT scan for AAA |
After your site completes enrollment (typically 18–24 months after the site opens), your ongoing research follow-up will be coordinated directly by Stanford University and UAB. Your regular medical care continues with your own doctor. The research team will contact you to schedule surveys and check-ins. This transition will be fully explained during the consent process.
Why Participate?
By joining WARRIORS, you contribute to research that could transform how women with AAA are treated — not just for yourself, but for every woman diagnosed after you. Your participation helps generate the evidence needed to save lives.
